I looked a little further:
Albert McKinney (next door to Malissa Jarvis McKinney Sawyer in 1920) was enumerated in 1910 with Benj. F. McKinney 56 yo b. NC and his wife, Hopie.
Albert gave his father's given name as Frank so I would guess that it was Benjamin Franklin McKinney. This was likely also Bennie who was your John's father.
Do you have a marriage record for Malissa? Or a death record for B. McKinney? Or a divorce record for them?
Also interesting is that Benj. F. McKiney in 1880 was enumerated with his grandparents, Uriah S. and Jane Austin, in Hyde County. Benj's brother, Joshua, was also enumerated in that household. Interesting that Bennie (per NC Birth Records) had a son named Joshua - probably named after his brother.
