Here is more material about a child of John P. McKinney, born about 1811 in SC, married Mary Ann Green in 1841, Shelby County, AL. The data is correct as stated; it should be considered a theory until additional documentary proof finds its way forward. For example, there is a marriage license in Shelby County that will probably prove or disprove this theory.

Josephine McKinney was born between 1844 & 1845 in AL, probably Shelby County, where her parents were married in 1841 and living in 1850.

According to the censuses:

In the 1850 US Census for AL, Josephean (female), 6, is living with parents John and Mary in Shelby County. Born AL.

In the 1860 US Census for AL, Josephine, 15, is living with parents John and Mary in Bibb County. Born AL.

On 27 November 1865 I. McKInney married Newton Lyles in Shelby County, AL.

In the 1870 US Census for MS, Josephine Lile is living in District 2, Sunflower County, MS. She is 23, keeping house, born AL. Also in the household are (husband) Newton M. Lile, 26, born AL, farmer, a male citizen; and son John N., 2, born AL. Neighbors include (John) Harvey Oaks, William Long, MIlton Hale, Henry Meeks.

In the 1880 US Census for MS, Josephine Liles is living in District 9, Holmes County, MS. She is 32, a boarder in the home of John (Harvey) Oaks. She is a seamstress, widowed, born AL, parents born AL, cannot read or write. Also in the household are her son John, 12, a laborer, born AL, parents born AL; Edward, 9, and Ricky, 10/12, both born MS, parents born AL; another boarder, Susan McKenney, 19, single, housekeeping, can read and write; John H. Oaks, Jr., John McElan & family.

The really interesting thing about this entry is that in addition to Josephine, John P. & Mary Ann McKinney had a daughter Susan, born AL about 1857. In 1880 Susan would have been about 22, which is close enough to 19. There is a Susan McKenney in Josephine's household in 1880. In 1881 Susan McKinney married William Buckhannon (sp?) in Leflore County. Leflore County is where I believe JPM moved between the 1870 & 1880 censuses. See my previous entry in this forum about Sarah Ellen McKinney.

Josephine might be in MS in 1900, married to Thomas Lyle, who would have to be a brother or cousin to her dead husband. This material is doubtful, but one never knows.

Anyway, that's my theory, and I'm sticking to it.

Happy hunting!
