Walter V. McKinney (Sr.) was born abt. 1898 near Hillsboro, Washington County Oregon (no info. on death or place of burial, Walter's father is believed to be William Walter McKinney who died 1900.
Walter V. Married on 10, June 1926 to Margaret Barr and their children were Walter Verne McKinney Jr. & Richard McKinney
Walter Verne McKinney Sr. attended public schools in the Hillsboro, washinton County OR area and while still in high school enlisted in the U.S. Army, March 27, 1917, and was inducted into the 3rd Regiment, Oregon Infantry, being one of the first of four men to enlist for the "Big War" from
Hillsboro.His command(?) became Co.B, 162nd Inf. Regiment,
41st Division.
After their period of training the Div. was sent to Camp Mills; then on Dec. 12, 1917, they shipped out for Europe. Landing at St. Nazaire, France on Dec. 27th.At about that time the army had a need for printers and Walter Verne McKinney was detailed to the Central Printing Plant at Paris, where he worked until May 22nd, 1919.
Walter Verne McKinney was honorably discharged from the Army's Quartemaster Corp, at Camp Mills with the rank of Sergeant First Class.
For awhile, after his discharge, he worked in a surveying crew which was plotting the first paved road between Portland, OR and Hillsboro, OR., a distance of about 20 miles.Walter was about 21 years of age at this time.He then entered Oregon Agriculture College, which today is Oregon State Colleg. Taking their commercial course, he graduated with a Batchelor of Science degree in 1923.
At this time, his mother, Emma C.(Carstens) McKinney
(gave or sold)him half interest in her newspaper, the
"Hillboro Argus,"and made him the editor; a position he has held into 1974.
Some time in 1974, Mr. Miles Green of Portland's "Oregonian" newspaper wrote an article of Walter Vernes long association with the Hillsboro Argus, noting that Walter has held the reins as editor for 50 years and at 75 years of age, he is still going strong.
On June 10, 1926, W. V. McKinney was betrothed to Miss Margaret Barr, a native of Hillsboro, Washington County OR.She was the dau. of Frank and Bessie (Sigler) Barr.
