Dear Laura,
There is a book, "Charles McKinney and Related Families," by Estelena McKinney Harper, 1972, that starts with Charlie 40 and moves forward through the families by his four wives with names, dates, and anecdotes.
Otherwise, have you gotten the names as yet. I only ask because there is no response posted as yet.
I can copy and send you some of the info in the book if you still need the info.
Meanwhile, I made passing reference to Charlie 40 and his many offspring in my book, "The Americans," which is nearly 60% McKinney pioneer/western stories and written in the style of Louis L'Amour.

My wife and I made a vacation trip to Spruce Pine, NC, and I picked up a copy of Ms. Harper's 1972 book in a bookstore in Little Switzerland.
In addition to a little sight seeing around Spruce Pine we searched for gems, did a little geneological work, and visited the Battle of King's Mountain site.
