Genetic genealogy is proving to be an invaluable tool when combined with traditional paper genealogy to prove one's ancestry. yDNA is a tiny portion of the whole DNA and is passed from father to son nearly unchanged for many generations. Because of this, a test using the yDNA can be used to trace a male surname - for instance all related McKinney males will have the same yDNA pattern: father, grandfather, McKinney uncles and male cousins. . . . . . all have the same y pattern. There are now 52 participants in the McKinney yDNA surname study. There are eleven specific groups: for instance, there are four participants who are related to Mordecai McKinney of early New Jersey; there are six participants who are related to James McKenney of Butler County, Kentucky; there are four participants who know they have a common ancestor in John McKinney b. ca 1703 in Maine; there are participants who trace their lines to the early Carolinas and so on. These participants have been able to prove their genetic link to these families when paper trails dried up. Although the cost of this test is coming down all the time, it is still outside the budget of some who would like to participate. There are several gift certificates being offered to help alleviate the cost; they are good til the end of this calendar year. If you are interested in the yDNA test or know any McKinney who is, please ask me! Spread the word; we would hate to have these certificates go unused!
