Dear Julie,The name McKinney is a sept of Clan MacKinnon. It is also a sept of Clan MacKenzie. Many variations of the name occurred on coming to America due to the fact that many MacKinnons/MacKenzies were Gaelic speakers and the name was written phonetically often by English speakers unused to the Gaelic sounds..At the time of Robert the Bruce, the McKinnons were right hand men of the Lord of the Isles.According to tradition it was the McKinnons who rowed the boat in one of the Bruce's many escapes from the English. When Robert the Bruce came to the throne of Scotland he showed his gratitude by awarding th McKinnons the Strathaird estate in Skye .This remained the principle clan lands until the forfeiture in the 18th century. The clan were Jacobites, supporters of Bonny Prince Charlie and after the '45, the death toll was stunning, clansman were made outlaws, many were prisoners transported, starvation loomed and some sold themselves and their children into indenture contracts to save their lives. There are also other periods of dispursment in their history. On the Isle of Skye there remains to this day the ruins of Castle McKinnon.
As with many Scottish Clans, there was a dispersal and shattering of clan bonds as the culture was destroyed. Therefore many McKinnons went to Ireland, America...a dispersal throughout the world.Historys of the clan and it's time periods of dispersal can be found at many places on the web.For instance....www.emackinnon.com, www.tartans.com have information or just typeMacKinnon into your search engine. There is no sure way to know from which spot your ancestors made the jump across the water but occasionally time frame and which historical catastrophy theymay have been dealing with can give you a slight clue.Donna
