I suspect that Jane C. is part of the Benjamin McKinney in some way. Besides Benj., seems he had brothers Joseph and John,& the name Caleb appears a bit later, but the first 3 were in land records by ca 1800 & Caleb by 1820. While these don't appear to be my McKinneys, I've studied them some to be sure. I have pored over enough Edgefield deeds to know that the Edgefield McKinneys sort themselves out by 4 areas. Ben & his group on headwaters of Edisto R. drainage at Jester's/Sister's Pond & headwaters of Mine Ck that flows into Saluda R. This land was on the Ridge or Ridge Road that went from Hamburg/Augusta area toward Columbia, & this ridge now has railroad bed for line that runs South from Johnston,SC. The Holston family, incl. Moses & William had land in this area by or before 1800. This family is also interesting for it's possible link to David Hoston, for whom river in Tenn. is named. It is known he retreated fr Hoston R. in 1750's to escape Indian attacks, & settled for some time in this area before returning up into VA.
Ben's McKinneys seem to have gotten up toward Turkey Ck a bit later in time. His bunch also married into the Melton family and came to GA. That's why one of them is named McKinney Melton in deeds.
The Barna McKinneys were around Hamburg area.
What I call the Plum Branch or Mordecai McKinney group were in the corner of Edgefield/Abbeville line at the Savannah River. I am just unravelling this group now & they are my family, I'm fairly completely certain.
The Roger McKinney group was along the Edgefield/Abbeville line along Beaverdam,Cuffeetown,Hard Labor & Henley's creeks in the Kirksey/Ninety-Six area. I may have seen a deed or so for a Roger down on Calhoun Ck or somewhere, but it would be out of the norm for this group.
Despite what these families appear to do in the censuses,as far as being mixed-up, the land deeds show them clearly separate from one another, at least up to the 1820's or so.
