John McKinley b 1798 KY. Moved to OH, IL

I am looking for information on John McKinley, who was born in KY in 1798, married Margaret, b 1795 in Virginia.

Children Alexander, born 1819 in Ohio; Mary J, b 1826 in Ohio, Calvin, born 1829 in Illinois; Melvina, born 1832 in Indiana?; Julia Ann, born 1842 in Illinois.

His biography states that he came to Bond County, Illinois from Ohio, then moved to Woodland, Fulton County, where he lived until his death in 1886, except for 5 years in Mason County, Illinois.

I am interested in his whereabouts prior to Illinois.
