Subject: RE: Family research Date: Tue, 30 Oct 2007 16:46:22 -0000 From: "Guildhall, PrintedBooks" <printedbooks.guildhall@cityoflondon.gov.uk> Add to Address BookAdd to Address Book Add Mobile Alert To: cgutermuth@yahoo.com Dear Ms Gutermuth, In reply to your recent email, I regret having drawn a complete blank with (Sir) John McKim. There is no entry for John McKim in The knights of England : a complete record from the earliest time to the present day of the knights of all the orders of chivalry in England , Scotland , and Ireland , and of knights bachelors by Wm. A. Shaw (Heraldry Today, 1971) which is normally a reliable source. I made a spot check for some of the people who, according to Shaw, were knighted in 1689 and their knighthoods were certainly recorded in the London gazette. However, the Gazette is not indexed at this date and although I did check copies around the end of July/early August which an Internet site suggested was the date of McKim’s knighthood I found no reference to him. I must stress, however, that this was not an exhaustive search. Other sources checked without success were: the Oxford dictionary of national biography, British biographical archive, the online catalogue of The National Archives at Kew and Musgrave’s Obituary. There were no entries whatsoever for the name McKim in the following genealogical bibliographies: Scottish family history: a guide to works of reference on the history and genealogy of Scottish families by Margaret Stuart (Oliver and Boyd, 1930); The genealogist’s guide by George W. Marshall (reprint of 1903 edn.) (Heraldry Today, 1967); A genealogical guide by J.B. Whitmore (Walford Brothers, 1953); The genealogist’s guide by Geoffrey B. Barrow (Research Publishing Co., 1977); Burke’s family index; Irish families by Edward MacLysaght (Blackrock, Co. Dublin: Irish Academic, 1985) More Irish families by Edward MacLysaght (Dublin: Irish Academic, c. 1982) or Bibliography of Irish family history by Edward MacLysaght (Irish Academic Press, 1982) As you know that McKim had Londonderry connections I would suggest that you contact the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland (PRONI). They can be emailed at proni@dcalni.gov.uk. If, as you believe, John McKim came originally from Scotland , it may also be worth contacting the National Archives of Scotland at enquiries@nas.gov.uk. I am sorry that we could not be of greater assistance.
