Have you seen an article in "The Gallovidian" by Dr. Norman James McKie, titled "McKies in Galloway"? A hasty rereading does not yield any direct info, but the article does trace the McKies back to Robert the Bruce and his land gift to the McKie-Murdoch-McClurg sons of the widow Annabel. It does concentrate on land holdings, but it's interesting and illuminates some of the Mormon records.
