Hiya Kathryn!
The Bernard in the name caught my eye. It's not THE most common name, so I thought it perhaps worth writing about my own earlier Bernard McKenzie, who lived not too far away from Styal at all, and who may well be our common ancestor.
I just posted about him in another thread, but will paste the relevant section here:
Hello All,
[My great great great great grandfather] was Alexander McKenzie, born Stockport, Cheshire, in 1829....Alexander's mother Jane McKenzie (maiden name unknown) survived to see the 1841 census, and was born c. 1791, in Scotland (no county or town given :o( ). Alexander's father had already died by then, but is given in the baptism records of five of his children as BERNARD MCKENZIE.

Now, my Bernard had these kids:
Eliza Jane McK 1815 Penrith
Robert 1822 Carlisle
Isaiah 1824 Stockport
Alexander 1826 Stockport
Emma 1829 Stockport
Alexander's kids are:
Eliza Jane 1848 Droylsden (my ancestor)
Anne 1851 Pendleton
Mary Ann 1854 Pendleton
Louisa 1856 Pendleton
Alexander 1858 Pendleton
Albert 1868 Crumpsall
As you can see, they moved around a bit, but it's all the Manchester area and some may have stayed nearer to Styal, or the kid may have been sent there from one of the towns above.
If your grandad was born 1931, we might estimate 1900-1910 for his parents, and so 1870-1890 for his grandparents, which just about gets us in range of my relatives above. His father may have known about his own great grandad Bernard (who might well have been a veteran of the Napoleonic Wars, if you follow my link above), and gave the name accordingly.
By the way, is the McKenzie from his father, or is there a case of illegitimacy here?
Cheers,
Ben
