A biography/family history of Thomas W. McKenzie, Havre, MT, is included in "Montana, Its Story and Biography", Vol 3, pages 697 & 698.

Thomas was born, 10 Nov 1870, the only child of Angus William and Betsey (Chisholm) McKenzie. Angus was born in Scotland in 1842 and was a small boy when his parents immigrated to Canada. He took up a mechanical trade and was a bridge builder for the Canadian Pacific railway. He located to Duluth, MN, where he was a bridge building superintendent for the St. Paul and Soo Railway. Angus died at age 56. Betsey was born in Pennsylvania. Angus & Betsy were married in Shakopee, MN, and she died in 1876.

Thomas was educated in Shakopee and there served an apprenticeship as a carriage painter. He followed that trade as a journeyman at St. Paul, Chicago, Minneapolis, and Indianapolis and in Apr 1896 moved to Havre, MT. He continued his trade, then became a clerk at a drug store and finally established a business in that line. In 1906, President Roosevelt appointed Thomas as postmaster and he was reappointed for several more terms. In Apr 1916, Thomas was elected mayor of Havre and re-elected in 1918.

On 14 Feb 1917, Thomas married Miss Margaret H. Auld, daughter of James C. and Mary Auld.

In 1926, he was appointed Hill County assessor & his wife, Margaret, was appointed in his place after his death in May 1927. (Note: an obituary of Thomas W. McKenzie is published in the "Havre Daily News Promoter", 15 May 1927.)
