Sharie,
I am hoping to clarify the lineage of Roderick McKenzie and Lilly (Lillian) Cameron. I would guess that Roderick and his wife were born before 1825 given the birth of their first child in 1845.
Here are the known children, all born in Huntingdon Co., PQ:
CATHERINE E. "KATE" MCKENZIE, b. 1845 Ormstown, PQ (married Jonathan Render in Antwerp, Jefferson Co., NY).
DONALD CAMPBELL MCKENZIE, b. 1847, Godmanchester, PQ, (married Elizabeth Curran, daughter of Samuel Curran and Sarah Brickley of Larne, Antrim, Ireland).(MY LINE).
ALEXANDER MCKENZIE, b. 1850, Godmanchester, PQ (I have no info. on Alexander).
JOHN MCKENZIE, b. 1852, St. Anicet, PQ (John never married and lived near or with his sister in Jefferson Co., NY until his death).
These children's births are listed in the 19th Century Chateauguay Valley Protestant Church Registers, with parentslisted as Roderick McKenzie and Lilly Cameron.
There is an additional record--that of the death of a Roderick McKenzie in Howick, Chateauquay Co., PQ in 1868.I can not confirm if this is the spouse of Lilly Cameron.
Interestingly, with the birth of the children, this family moved closer to the river and, therefore, to Glengarry Co.If you follow a map, it's possible to see the progression from Ormstown to Godmanchester and finally to St. Anicet, which is just across the river from Glengarry. This would not explain the death of Roderick McKenzie in Howick, to the east, if he is indeed the same man.
I also ran into a deed of sale from an Alexander Cameron whoresided in Hawkesbury, Prescott Co. and who must have been disposing of land in Huntingdon, PQ in the year 1837.Since the McKenzie children's mother was a Cameron, this connection to Prescott Co. is interesting.
There are a couple of things that have made me suspect a connection to Glengarry Co.First, DONALD C. MCKENZIE (b. 1847) married ELIZABETH CURRAN in Prescott County in 1885.The area where the Currans lived was in East Hawkesbury and Van Kleek Hill, very close to the northeastern township of Lochiel in Glengarry Co.
There are several McKenzie families in Glengarry as well as several Cameron families in the area, but I have not been able to sort them out.Nor have I been able to locate my ancestor, Donald McKenzie in any records between his birth in 1847 and his marriage in 1885.He should appear in someone's household, even if he was an orphan at a young age.
I can demonstrate a New York connection by way of Catherine E. McKenzie, daughter of Roderick and Lilly, who married Johnathan Render--an Englishman--in Antwerp, Jefferson County, New York in 1879.She and her brother John McKenzie, lived their entire lives in that county.Several photos in the Curran/McKenzie photo album were also taken in Malone, NY, which is in Franklin Co., just a few miles south across the U.S. border from Huntingdon.
My ancestor Donald McKenzie indicated in various records that he came to the United States in 1869, yet I have not been able to find him in 1870 or 1880 U.S. Census records.(If his father was the Roderick McKenzie who died in 1868, this might be a rationale for Donald needing to seek opportunities for himself and thus his migration to the U.S.).He certainly resurfaces in Prescott Co. in time to marry Elizabeth Curran in 1885.His whereabouts from his birth in 1847 in Quebec until his marriage in 1885 in Ontario remains a mystery to me.Since youngest sibling, John McKenzie, was not born until 1853, I would expect to find the oldest three children in the 1851 Canadian Census, probably in or near Huntingdon Co., PQ.It is simply speculation on my part that sometime after John McKenzie's birth in 1853 the family migrated across the river to Glengarry or Prescott Co.But, I have absolutely no proof of that.
Shortly after their marriage in 1885, Donald and Elizabeth (Curran) McKenzie migrated to the central valley farmland in Madera County, California, along with Elizabeth's brothers, James and Henry Curran.I would never have made the Canada connection without the Curran/McKenzie photo album, which pointed me in the direction of Prescott Co.. ON.I am a 4th generation Californian on this line and would love to connect with my Canadian cousins.
My family line goes:
Roderick McKenzie/Lilly Cameron
Donald McKenzie (1847)/Elizabeth Curran
Sarah "Sadie" McKenzie (1887)/Edgar Pinkston Brown
Donald McKenzie Brown (1908)/Ruth Lois Kemper
Donna Susanne Brown/Jesse Delbert Wilbanks (my parents--living)
As you can see, my grandfather, Donald Brown, carried the McKenzie surname as his middle name and the McKenzie name has been carried down to my own daughter, Elizabeth McKenzie.
I am quite new to researching in Canada.Any assistance is greatly appreciated!
