The link above will take you to information about the Mackenzie DNA Project.
Y-DNA passes directly from father to son.If in the past a McKenzie changed his name to Gibson, the Y-DNA identifying this man will remain the same and will match with other McKenzies and not with the Gibson family.
If you believe that a surname change has occurred, it would be to your benefit to test a few of the males in your family line. For confirmation of the results you should choose two or three men that are as far from each other on the family tree as you can get.And chose the oldest men that will agree to the test.
The test is very simple, just swab the inside of the cheek and return the sample for testing.
It is also best to choose the 37 marker DNA test kit as that number of markers is necessary to establish a match within a genealogical time frame.
Most of the McKenzies that have been tested fall within haplogroup R1b.
My own McKenzie line was somewhere in TN by 1780 and in IL by 1807 or earlier. We are in haplogroup R1b1c7 and so far don't match any other McKenzies in the U.S.
I encourage you to take the DNA test.
