Greetings Nell:

Sound like we might share George Morton McKenney as an ancestor although your information does not match the notes of my greatgrandmother Julia McKenney Gale (1859-1948), the eldest of George's daughters. You have him born 1820, she has him 1821, and he appears in censuses to be born 1823/24 (age 26 1850, age 36 1860). Note some records use "McKinney." Anyway, according to her notes (and my parenthetical additions):

George Morton McKenney was born December 15th, 1821 in Canada. Died April 23, 1874, of consumption. Martha Eliza Mix was born November 28th 1836 (the first white girl born in Oregon Township, Ogle County, Illinois, daughter of William Judd Mix Sr. and Eliza Martha Wood Goodwin Mix). Were married May 20th, 1856. The children were: Henry Judd born August 17th 1857. Died at 6 yrs of age. Julia born Dec. 19th, 1859. Richard born February 24th 1862--Died January 24th 1931. George Mix born March 28th 1864. Died Mar. 21st, 1909 was never married; buried on his 45th birthday. A fine Physician + loved by every one. Albert born June 23rd 1867 Died January 18th 1868. William born Janurary 5th 1870 Died at the age of 3 months. Bonnie born February 28th 1871 Died at the age of 13 months. Betsey Hutchinson born February 24th 1874 + died Janurary 5 1923 at LaGrande, Oregons.

Julia indicates her grandparents were Richard and Betsey Hutchinson McKenney who lived (farmed) in Nashua Township (Ogle County, Illinois, northeast of Dixon, Lee County). The Leslie Hutchinson McKenney I was inquiring about ("Killed by the Indians in the West") was one of their children and one of George Morton McK's brothers.

She also gives Richard's parents as Matthew and Elizabeth Clute McKenney who left Montgomery County, New York, and moved with their children to Alymer, Ontario, before coming to Dixon about 1836. The handwriting is a little tough to read, but all the children were born in the same place which appears to be Schanice Creek, Montgomery County, NY. I'm pretty sure of the Schani but not sure of the last letter or two. She says the McKenneys are Scotch Irish and the Clutes "pure Holland Dutch" and that her (Julia's) generation is eight generations removed from the throne of Holland. This gets into a claim to property in New York City which had recently been rejected (and may be related to bogus genealogical work, if I have my stories/legends straight).

There are a few additional pages of notes on McKenneys from Ogle and Lee Counties, mostly names and birth/death dates with a few tidbits like Matthew McK weighing over 400 pounds and needing a ladder to get into the light wagon he used instead of a buggy and his wife being small, underweight and blind for years before she died. I don't see any references to McKs in California, just one move to Oklahoma and another to Nevada.

Regards,

Bill Diven
