Hi Kirsten-
I know it's been a long time since you posted this request, but I'm hoping you're still interested in the McKelvey family?
I too am researching the McKelvey line, through my grandmother who was a Hague (from Pittsburgh). Anyway- here is a "family history" I found in family papers that someone wrote and sounds very similar to some of your info. I don't know how accurate it is, but it might help us both.
This is a quote from the paper I have:
"*John McKelvey married his first cousin Jane Rae Blakely- a widow who came from Ireland with one child Margaret (Carney); he became the father of William and James McKelvey-then went to California with the "Forty-Niners" during the Gold Rush. After many years of silence, Jane married a Dr. Martin* of Pittsburgh and became mother of George, Joseph, and Jane (Ohlinger). After the death of Dr. Martin, she returned to her farm near Kittanning where John McKelvey found her when he came home with some "nuggets" after an absence of 27 years!" (Neat story if it's true! :))
My information also mentions:
David McKelvey (from County Down,Ireland--grandfather of John listed above??). Settled in Westmoreland County- near Puckety Creek where he is buried.
David had a daughter Margaret who remained in Ireland and married Hugh Rea. Her children were Jane and Martha.
David also had 3 sons --(David Jr., Hugh, and John) who followed him to PA.
David Jr.- (father of *John listed above--I think?)lived 3 1/2 yrs. in Wilkinsburg then settled in Kittanning, PA. Father of James, Thomas, *John, and William--also Nancy, Rebecca and Margaret. He married a 2nd time to a Miss Smith and their son was Smith McKelvey. The 8 children each inherited 50 acres of the 400 acre farm.
John- (this is the perhaps the uncle of the John mentioned above-David Jr.'s brother?) who settled in Harmarville. Nothing else written about him.
Hugh- Who settled in Swissvale and his son James became the father of Dr. W. H. McKelvey who was for many years the President of the old Board of Education in Pittsburgh.
I haven't verified any of this information, but your mention of David McKelvey, John McKelvey, Jane Martin, and Kittanning PA caught my eye. So perhaps our families overlap somehow?
Hope this helps!
