Karen:
There are many different McKellar families that settled in western Elgin and eastern Kent counties of Ontario in the early 1800's. I come from 2 of them. So far I've had no luck from this forum, but many of us are aware of your husband's ancestors.
Yarmouth is still a township in the area of St. Thomas. My great-grandfather, James Peter McKellar, was married in 1869 in Wallacetown (Dunwich Township, Elgin County), not too far west of there. He was born in 1842, reportedly in Oban, Argyll, Scotland. His mother-in-law was Ann (McKellar) Cunningham, of Duart (Aldborough Township, Kent County). Ann was married in 1845 to John Cunningham, and after her death, her sister Helen married John in 1865. James' sister (name unknown) married a Campbell and lived in Kintyre (Elgin County).
I have been told that the West Elgin Historical Society in Dutton has a wealth of records that we could find useful.
