Dear McKehan forum: In reading the various postings I became aware that several descendants of George H. McKeehan were unaware whose son he was (James & Elizabeth.) A letter by Sharon Rosser in 1994 was forwarded to me some time ago by John Andrew Simpson (email@example.com) containing what seems to be very good evidence of his parentage. She has given me permission to reproduce this letter, as far as I am able to avoid mistakes, in this forum. At present I have for the children of James McKeehan and Elizabeth Lauderdale: 1)Mary (Polly), b. 17 Apr 1798, 2)James Jr., b. 1799, 3)George H., b. 1800, and 3)Samuel, b. 13 Oct 1807. If anyone in the forum knows of other children, I would like to know. Sharon's letter:
Dear Mr. Simpson:
Please forgive me for taking so long to reply, I misplaced your letter. Please note my address, I must have recorded it incorrectly in Madisonville.
My mother is Allie Kayrine McKeehan (Wallace, Smith). She was born Nov. 24, 1927 in Monroe Co., TN.
Her parents were Sarah (Irene) Wilson born April 27, 1886 in Madisonville, and James Franklin (Frank) McKeehan b. May 12 1877 in Vonore, TN. He died June 14, 1945 and is buried in the Harris-Wilson graveyard behind the nursing home in Madisonville. The cemetery got its name because it was property owned on a home sight of Sarah's Great-Grandfather , George C. Harris.
James Franklin's parents were Mary M. McLemore born c. 1838 in TN and George Franklin McKeehan bc 1831 (1870 census) or 1836 (1880 census). Geo. Franklin's parents were Elizabeth Millard bc 1805 in TN died c 1850-1851. His father George H. McKeehan bc1800 in TN married Elizabeth Sept. 16, 1825 in Green Co., TN. Elizabeth was alive according to court records in 1850-but on April 22, 1851 Geo. H. remarried-Malinda Cunningham. For some reason the only other information I have on him is that he was alive on the 1860 census.
Geo. H's parents were Elizabeth Lauderdale (not much known) and James McKehan bc 1769 in Penn., died 1840 after census (Note by LDD: I think this means Elizabeth died then.)
On the 1850 Monroe Co., TN census, entry #477 James McKehan bc 1769 Penn. was living with a daughter bc 1798 who was married to Robert Simpson. The relationships are noted.
George H. and Elizabeth Millard had another son Alfred Lafayette b Jan 10, 1841 in Madisonville. He married Sarah Angeline Holcomb b April 12, 1843 in Monroe Co. (Note by LDD: the clerk in Monroe Co. that year made several mistakes, e.g. Susan Watson for Susan Wisecarver. Hawkins and Holcomb sound a lot alike in East Tennessee.)
I also gathered information from the archives in Nashville, that wonderful little library in Madisonville, and some from the McClung collection in Knoxville.
Ella Mae Land- Mirandy Tennie's (bc 1871) daughter (daughter of Mary M. McLemore and Geo. Franklin McKeehan, sister to my ancestor James Franklin, verified a lot of information for me. She is quite elderly and when questioned remembered a lot. (Note by LDD: She is now 93 in a rest home and not able to respond.)
I have found McKeehan spelled many different ways including George F. McKeeken- Pvt ECO- 59th MI?-confederate soldier (found at McClung.) I sent to National Archives and rec'd nothing.
Any help I've been I'm glad and anything you would care to share I would be grateful.
Sincerely, Sharon E. Rosser 1-513-232-0683
Also sincerely, Larry Dyer
