Brad, I have since discovered that Rufus was originally an Owens. He is listed in the Campbell Co. Census as Rufus Owens, age 7, living in the home of Robert and Polly Ann McKee. Robert was 25 at the time and Polly Ann was 27. Later, Rufus is listed in the 1870 Pulaski Co. Census as Rufus Clifford McKee, so he was either adopted or took his stepfather's name. I think Polly Ann was either his mother or some other relative, as she was Polly Ann Owens when she married Robert McKee. Is any of this familiar?
