Hi Linda

Thanks for the kind message and advice. Part of my government/military work focuses on research so I have a lot of practice and resources available. I do the genealogy as a hobby and it is somewhat of a stress reliever (like doing a puzzle). I have done all the the things you suggest and then some. When I hit a dead end, I usually give things a rest and come back to them later. Since my GGrandmother died in 1917 little information exists, but the Kansas State Census every year on the 5s has been helpful. This is the only side of the family that has really tripped me up.

There are a lot of nuances:

1. a huge McKee family existed in Joplin, MO/Galena, KS area where there were a lot of Ambrose McKees.

2. Ambrose sr went by his middle name Ed (edward (from my G Grandmother's death certificate, and more commonly by his initials (A.E.)

3. Ambrose's wife, Chlora and her sister Arvilla worked at a hotel in the lead mining district of Cherokee, KS at 16 (claimed she was 18, draw your own conclusions).

4. Several McKees were part of an outlaw gang that robbed banks in Indian territory (OK) from 1890-1905, under 30 miles away from Cherokee, KS. Some were listed as being killed around the same time period Ambrose sr dissappears.

5. My mom clearly remembers visits from her Uncle 'Brose (Ambrose jr.) as a child.

6. As I'm sure you know, the census data is far from accurate and birth places change every census.

I thought I had cracked the line but I never feel secure in my research until I have confirmed three resources on every fact, and I recently found out my theories on Ambrose Sr's lineage were wrong, so back to square one. My mom still lives in that area so I get to the county genealogy library when I can. Some things just can't be found on the internet.

After I run into dead ends, I give things a rest and check back on the internet about every 3 months, thats where I ran into your name.

I am currently serving with the Army Corps of Engineers and will have 21 years (enlisted and commissioned) served in January.

Again, thanks for the information. I'll let you know more as I get things unravelled. Good luck with your research!

Leland
