Samuel Knox and Rebecca McKee appear to have married in England and had a son John Knox (b. before 1775 in England d. 1827 Amite Co., MS) They came to SC and settled in Williamsburg Co. and Samuel appears to be listed in the 1790, 1800 and 1810 Censuses of Williamburg Co. Would appreciate any information on either Samuel Knox, Rebecca McKee, or their families

Will of Joseph McKee dated 23 March 1810 Williamsburg District, South Carolina, mentions granddaughter, Ann Mitchell and Elizabeth McCurdy, grandsons John White and SAMUEL M. KNOX, daughter Ann Knox, daughter Elizabeth who married James Fleming, brother Adam, father Archibald, brother John Shaw, nephews Robert and Thomas Witherspoon and friend Henry Hanna.
The Knox family moved to Mississippi. Joseph's father Archibald McKee was in South Carolina as early as 1740. He also left a will.

You mentioned that Joseph McKee's father, Archibald, also left a will. Do you by any chance have a copy or know where I might view one via the internet? I would be ever so grateful for a copy if you do.
I am descended through Joseph McKee's grandson, John White.

To my knowledge there is not a copy of Archibald McKee's will available on the internet but it is summarized on page 295 of the Moore Abstracts. Sandra McKee, one of several "researching cousins" who are descended via Adam McKee obtained a photocopy of the handwritten will which she described as "in poor shape with strips of paper missing.. background light gray with handwriting not completely clear -- readable but not clear.
Sandra's summary of what she saw agrees pretty well with the Moore Abstract which showed
ARCHIBALD McKee, his mark, Prince Fredericks Parish, Craven Co, SC
One third of estate to wife ELIZABETH
Residue of estate to five children
ADAM
JOSEPH
MARTHA COOPER
JANE MILLER
ARCHIBALD KNOX
Also mentions wife's daughters
JANE WITHERSPOON
MARG & ELIZABETH O'BRIEN
Son-in-law WILLIAM MILLER
d 3 Oct 1776 P/R nd, p241

Sandra's summary from the photocopy (paraphrased)
-He mentions Elizabeth
-Mentions son-in-law William Miller
-Mentions Samuel Knox WITHOUT SPECIFYING RELATIONSHIP
10 shillings to each
-The remainder of his estate was to his five children
-He mentions ADAM first
-Then JOSEPH
-Then MARTHA COOPER
-JANE MILLER and
-ARCHIBALD KNOX
Elizabeth McKee, James Fleming & son Joseph McKee were named executors/ executrix.
The signature was picked up as "Archibald A. McKee" with the "A" apparantly his mark rather than a middle initial. Archibald and McKee were on separate lines along the right edge of the paper along with the words "his mark". If A were his middle initial it probably stood for "Adam" ...(but) signing by mark may have been... merely an expediency due to his physical condition at the time it was drafted.
Now back to the Archibald Knox issue. Some researchers felt that since there was mention of five children that one of the five was named "Archibald Knox McKee" but that requires a stretch I am unwilling to make. There definitely WAS an Archibald Knox who solidly fits this entry and who may be found elsewhere in this forum. He was born ca.1750 and died in Amity County, Mississippi in Feb 1816 (which also links in with the will of your ancestor Samuel McKee's item about the court of equity decision he apparantly lost)
Over the past thirty years I have sensed that there may have been some scrambling between father/son spouses & direct heirs of Joseph McKee or his siblings. Joseph's will gives us a pretty good fix on his heirs but names in common among spouses may have led some researchers astray (possibly including myself). My take on it was that the Archibald Knox mentioned in Archibald's will was either his son-in-law or grandson through his daughter Elizabeth Ann nee McKee and that the Samuel Knox mentioned was a brother of Archibald Knox. Some of the things posted and possibly picked up from my "rambling narratives" during those years assign Samuel as Elizabeth's husband and Archibald Knox as their son but the DAR file and the Archibald Knox will seem to make a stronger case that Archibald was her husband. Almost certainly this daughter of Archibald McKee with the Knox connection had died before he made his will. The information I have on the White line via Joseph's daughter Elizabeth is "second hand" and probably less complete than what you have.
Another question -- secondary sources seem to reflect tombstone inscriptions for Joseph and two of his wives but don't document where the info came from -- Can you help me fill in the blanks? I couldn't find anything the day I researched at the Kingstree Library to help locate the cemetery, headstone inscriptions or even that I had interpreted correctly. I will be quite interested in comparing notes with others researching these lines.
