Linda...My g-g-g-grandfather was considered to be an orphan when his father died in 1767. He had three brothes and all of them were indentured to learn a trade until they reached the age of 21. My direct ancester was indentured to Ambrose McKee to learn the trade of a tailor. While that is the official reason, the underlying reason was that they be taught how to read and write and also be instructed in the doctrines of the Presbyterian faith.
The oldest grave at Providence Presbyterian Church is that of John McKee who died in 1764 at the age of 43 years. The McKee family has remained in this community to the present date.
