Al
Thanks for your letter. From your website it appears that my John is not the John from Charleston. My John was born in County Down Ireland in 1783. We don't know when he entered the states or at what place. The first record we have of him is when he married widow Martha Saunders in Savannah Georgia in 1823. We don't have any parents names and the only previous info we have is his origin in County Down. He was reputed to have come from " up north" and settled finally in Covington County Alabama where he reared a family. From family tradition we think he had a brother(s) in the northern states but have no way of identifying them other than a supposed nephew Robert who served in the Union army during the civil war and rescued John's son Gauley from camp Douglas. Do you have any clues that I might pursue?
Thanks
Colin
