Linda, the article states the information is from his grave marker. The book also mentions Ambrose McKee in this context: John Rea was born August 11, 1764 in Mecklenburg County, and died there on Nov, 11, 1843. He was about 3 years old when his father died, his mother later married Robert Lewis. When John was 10 years old he was apprenticed to Ambrose McKee to learn the trade of tailoring. I also found Ambrose in my copy of "Roster of Soldiers from North Carolina in the American Revolution" as receiving a Comptroller's voucher. I also found his will abstract in my copy of Holcomb's abstracts of early wills of Mecklenburg County, NC. Wife is Eleanor, sons are Thomas, William, John and Ambrose, daughters are Mary, Susannah, and Martha. Will is dated 12/13/1779, and states he is in poor health. My copy of Cyrus L. Hunter's " Sketches of Western North Carolina" also mentions a James McKee of the Revolution. I did find a James McKee in my DAR Patriot Index as : McKee, James, born abt 1735, died 7/8/`821, married to Abigail, Soldier of NC. "Sketches" states this James McKee is the ancestor of the McKee families around Armstrong's Ford on the South Fork of the Catawba River.
