Cabarrus County North Carolina

Abraham C. McKee by his declaration was born in Mecklenburg County North Carolina some time late in 1786 or early 1787. He entire adult life and probable death was in Cabarrus County NC. He died some time after 1860, as there in no family record in the 1870 US Census.

The 1810 Cabarrus Co. census lists Abraham age 16-26 (23 yrs), one male child under 10 years and wife age 16-26. As there are ten in household engaged in agriculture, it is assumed Abraham had significant land holding and Slaves early in his marriage. After Cabarrus County was formed in 1806 and about 1816 Abraham was elected to the North Carolina Assembly serving as Senator in 1816-1817 with Representative Samuel Morrison. This suggest a successful local land owner.

At that time Abraham lived close to Wm. McKeay (sic). and may have been son of Wm. At this time Wm was over 45 years, had one male under 10 and three males in household age 16-45 same as Abraham. Also there were two females one under 10 and one over 45.

The 1820 Cabarrus Co. census lists Abraham age 26-45 (33 yrs). Two males under 10 years, three other males 26-45, two females under 10 years and no apparent wife. Four males listed in agriculture with seven male and five female Slaves. This suggests that Abrahamís wife had died in mid 1810's about the time he was in the NC General Assembly and that the household in 1820 combined that of Wm. and that there may have been four brothers of about the same age.

The 1830 Cabarrus Co census lists Abraham age 40-50 (43 yrs). The household includes Two males under five, two male 15-20, two males 20-30 two females 10-15 and one female 30-40. This suggests that Abraham remarried after 1835.

The 1840 Cabarrus Co census of Oct 22 lists Abraham age 50-60 (53 yrs). The household includes two males 5-10, Two males 10-15 and one female 40-50, presumed 2nd wife about 45 years.

The 1850 Cabarrus Co census of Sept. 9 lists Abraham as farmer age as 63 years with modest holdings. Included in the household are Rachel McKee? Age 89, born in 1761 in New Jersey, poss Abrahamís mother that had previously lived elsewhere. Also listed for first time was Emuline E. McKee? age 40 year born in Iredol Co (sic). This does not correlate with age of Abrahamís 2nd wife. Additionally were Abraham C Mckee Jr. age 21 Doctor by profession, Ephraim E.D.F. Mckee age 24, Attn-at-Law by profession, John B. B. McKee age 18 farmer, William W. L. McKee age 15 farmer, all born in Cabarrus Co and Emiral Pearson female age 5 born in So County S. Dist ( poss orphan?). and Margaret Plaster age 50 born in Rowan Co. NC. This census data suggests that Abraham had remained as active farmer on the family holding but that the household had expanded in the last ten years.

The 1860 Cabarrus Co census of July 3, Concord West Section NC lists Abraham McKnee as Gentleman, age 74 years with modest holdings. Included in the household are Emmu McKnee age x8?, robert russell no age, Burnett Simms age 22, Clara Revels, Age 40, Black and Sarah Revels age 2, Black. All occupants born in NC. This entry suggest that Abraham had moved from farm into town as neighbors are all small family trades people by profession.

Record of Abrahamís buried, most likely in Cabarrus Co, or any members of his family are yet to be found. It is possible that his sons did not survive the Civil War. The location of this McKee homestead probably near Concord the county seat of Cabarrus Co.has not been located in County Records.
