Rev. Milton Robert McKee, Indiana (Shelby, Decatur, Monroe & Morgan Co.)
I am searching for information on the ancestors of my g-g-grandfather, Rev. Milton Robert McKee. I've posted here before, but I didn't have much information at that time.I have a fairly good handle on his descendants, but now I need to find his ancestors.
Milton and his descendants were in Indiana and did not stray too far, moving between Shelby, Morgan, Monroe and Decatur counties. The problem is, I cannot find any connection between him and the other McKee’s in Indiana at the time. Any help would be appreciated. This is what I have on him:
Milton was born in Shelby Co., IN on 20-Oct-1830 and died in Morgan Co., IN on 26-Feb-1899. I believe he is listed on the 1850 Shelby Co. census as Milton O. McKee. He was living with another family. He married Catherine Hawkins (b. 20-Jul-1834, IN; d. 06-Feb-1860, IN). In 1850 she was living with her parents, John and Mary [Leigh/Lee] Hawkins (both b. in VA). John’s father William was also living with them.
Milton and Catherine had two children, John Hawkins (b. 1854) and Franklin (b. 1856). By the time the 1860 census was taken, Catherine had died and Milton and John were living with the Robert Buckner family in Monroe Co., IN. I’ve not yet been able to find Franklin on that census. On a side note, Austin Clark McKee, a son of Milton’s by his second wife Elizabeth Back, married Martha Elizabeth Neal whose brother, Dempsey William “Dee” Neal, married Myrtle Mae Buckner, daughter (I believe) of the John Buckner who was age 2 when Milton and John were living with the Buckner family in 1860.
Another interesting thing is Catherine’s family had a one-year-old female named Mary E. McKee living with them in 1860. I am wondering if Mary was a daughter of Catherine and Milton’s. There is a 12-year-old Mary McKee living in Sullivan Co., IN at the time of the 1870 census with the Thomas Burton family, but I am not certain they are one and the same because Sullivan Co., is on the Indiana state line bordering Illinois. The counties Milton lived in are in the middle of the state.
In August of 1860, Milton married Elizabeth E. Back. By 1870 they were living in Decatur Co., IN and had the following children with them: Austin Clark, William Harmon, Charles Owen, Thomas F.; and John and Franklin from his first marriage. Harriet E., LuElla O., Jabul M., and Nancy Ellen were born after 1870.
