I don't know for certain that my John Mckee who died in Meriweather Co., GA in 1868 was son of Thomas McKee of Abbevile SC. According to census, my John was born in SC in 1793. His wife was named Martha. Two of his sons were named William b. 1814 in SC and the other Thomas S. McKee born 1816 in SC.
I am assuming that these McKees were Scot or Scots-Irish. Somewhere I came across the Scottish naming customs which I have found helpful in some cases:
The eldest son is nmaed after the paternal grandfather
The second son is named after the maternal grandfather
The third son is named after the father
The eldest daughter is named after the maternal grand-
The second daughter is named for the paternal grand- mother
The third daughter is named after the mother.
Subsequent children were named for still earlier forebearers, but generally, the naming pattern was less standard.
