Decatur County Journal-Iowa
Thursday, May l7, l9l7

JOHN MONROE MCKEE, son of W.L. and M.J. MCKEE, was born at Westerville, Iowa, September 23, l857, and died at his home near Grand River, Iowa, May 8th, l9l7, at 8 p.m., at the age of 59 years, 7 months and l6 days.

He, with his parents, moved to his late home in l858 where he resided until his death. On this farm he worked and toiled for his father, mother, brothers and sisters. After the death of his father he was the head of the home, being the oldest of twelve children. He was very much devoted to the comfort of his parents in their last days, and was devoted to his sisters to the extent of self denial for them and self sacrifice.

He, in this situation, toiled and seemed contented, not to marry and rear a family of his own. He was in the seance of sacrifice and devoted to both father and mother and to the brothers and sisters. Not only was he thus devoted to his own but was always willing, yes, anxious to lend assistance to all those in need.

His religion creed was that of the practical sort, his was a faith in God and service to his fellow men. His last words to his sisters and brothers was, "God has blessed me and I am ready to go."

The near ones left to mourn him are MRS. I.W. WEST, of Leon, Iowa; MRS. FRED HALL, of Van Wert; MRS. T.L. HEMBRY, of Grand River; CLINTON MCKEE, of Homestead, Oklahoma, and a foster brother, FRED VAN LAW, of Grand River, Iowa.

An exemplary citizen has passed to the demise in JOHN MCKEE. His true upright life remains in the community as a monument to his memory. His uprighteousness will live after him. The funeral services were conducted from the residence at 2 p.m., Thursday, May l0, l9l7, in the presence of a large concourse of friends, by Rev. P.H. Hawk, of Farmington, Iowa, a former Pastor of the M.E. Church in Grand River, Iowa, after which he was laid to rest in the Woodard Cemetery to await the resurrection morn.
