Help. Trying to trace the ancestry/place of birth of my great grandfather William Wesley MCKEMIE (also "MCAMY"), b. 18 Dec 1826, married on 1 Jan 1849 child-bride Susan MOORE (b. 15 June 1836-Franklin Co.?). They had 11 children. He reportedly homesteaded on ancestor's military service grant in the Big Muddy area S-W of Benton, IL. Wm. W.'s siblings were John R. b. 1 Aug 1832 (m. 21 Mar1852 Sidney GIFFORD) and Jesse b. abt. 1824 (m. 4 Jul 1844 Abigail ARMSTRONG). Other relatives in Franklin County, IL were sisters or cousins (?) Martha McKemie (m. 25 Oct. 1841 John BARTLEY), Harriet Jane McKemie (m. 13 Apr 1851 Daniel R. MCELYEA (also MCELYIA), Mary McKemie (m. 19 Oct 1859 William N. MCELYEA), and Charlotte "Charity" McKemie (m. 5 Jan 1849 George W. ROBINSON). Wm. W.'s father or unckle (?) Samuel L. McAmy (b. abt 1789) may have married a Cherokee by the name of Serena(e). Sam and Serena lived in Franklin County about 1840 to1850, and then moved or died somewhere unknown. Wm. W. served in the Mexican War (IL Vol., 2nd Reg., Co. K). He also served in Civil War (Union-110 Reg., Co I. Inf.) for three months, and then resigned commission. Family history tells that Wm. W. then met up with Tennessee relatives and learned how to write his name. He may have served with South; when he returned to Franklin County, son Joseph Sherman was renamed Joseph Mosby. Please share! Sorry for the long post.
