Ann was born in 1816 at Ardalanish, Isle of Mull, Scotland.
David was the brother of Peter Matthews, who was hung for his participation in the Rebellion of 1837.
Due to poor health, Ann returned to Mull to recupperate, but succombed to her illness and died at Knockvologan in 1859. She is buried in the Kilvickeon Churchyard on Mull.

After Ann's death, David married a Jean Smith in 1864. It's been suggested that they relocated to the USA, perhaps Michigan.
