My mother is a McIlwain. She was born in Hamilton Ontario, Canada, in 1951. Not sure on her dad's name (he passed away when she was small). But she and her sisters and mother moved to Detroit area when she was 8. Perhaps, since you grew up in Detroit, you may start looking at the McIlwain's in Ontario. I know my mother's relatives have done some work on their family tree. But I am not in contact with the relative that has that information, and neither is she. I recall hearing that our ancestor had travelled over from Ireland in the mid 18th century to fight as a soldier for hire in Canada. Not sure if this is helpful, but maybe Canada would be a good place to start.
