I am descended from Samuel McIlwain who emigrated from County Down in the north of Ireland to Goderich in Huron County, Ontario in the 1850s. He was accompanied by his several children from his two marriages (one, David, was born on the ship that crossed the Atlantic and his second wife was Agnes Johnston. There are many McIlwains still living in the Goderich area and many more buried in Maitland Cemetery, Goderich. There are many many McIlwains in northern Ireland although there the name is spelt with an "e" at the end. We must have lost it along the way. Samuel came from Tonnaghmore townland near Saintfield in County Down.
