Anne

... What happened to the five children that Margaret gave birth to- did they go to Canada with their father or was that marriage and move after they were adults

or able to fend for themselves? Who was the second wife- was she from Co. Down?

According to what I have,
Margaret Kilpatrick b in Ireland about 1800, died 1835 in Ireland, was
Samuel McIlwain's first wife and they had 5 children. The last child was b in Ireland in 1835. (Margaret's cause of death childbirth?) The 5 Children were:
William b 1821 died Mar 12, 1896 in Goderich, Huron County, Ontario, Canada
David b 1822 died Mar 6, 1908 in Goderich, Huron County, Ontario, Canada
Margaret Jane b 1824 died 1895
Andrew b 1825 +/- unknown death date but d in Detroit, Michigan, U.S.A.
Agnes Nancy b 1830 died in 1904
John b 1835 unknown death date in Turnbury, Huron County, Ontario, Canada

The 5th child John was my gg grandfather.

Samuel then m Agnes Johnston b 1817 in Ireland and their first child was b Apr 14, 1840 crossing the Atlantic.

Yes, the whole family came to Canada.
