How is Joseph descended from John and Ann (Cunningham) McIlvaine?

(Excerpt)

JOHN MACILVAINE of Grimet, son of John McIlvaine and Anna Corrie, is believed to have married a Cunningham, niece of William, Earl of Glencairn. She is mentioned in the will of Quentin MacIlvaine in connection with his nephews, “the young sons of John MacIlvaine of Grimet.” Quentin MacIlvaine made disposition of Thomaston in his will, but in a codicil stated that it was no longer in his possession, having been sold for the payment of fines and debts. John MacIlvaine died September 21, 1669. His son John succeeded to Grimet, but with him the property passed from the family as a result of their being Covenanters.

At this time religious persecutions forced the family to take refuge for a short time in the north of Ireland, making their home by the shores of Loughneagh in Ulster. Until 1692 their names are to be found on the records of the Old Kirk as members of the session. Their names appear on almost all of the documents signed by the gentry and known as the “Solemn League and Covenant.” It was during the persecution of the covenanters in the war resulting in the death of King Charles the First of England, that the property of the MacIlvaines passed from their hands. One of the descendants of John MacIlvaine who shortly returned to Ayrshire was:

JOSEPH MCILVAINE, born circa 1700, married first, June 1, 1721, Anna Rogerson. She was the daughter of Thomas Rogerson of Dumfries, who was of a family from county Tyrone, Ireland, descended from Rory, son of Ruadbrigh, “the red haired king.” His will and wills of a number of his family in Lochbrow are in the register’s office in Edinburgh. Joseph McIlvaine was a prominent man in Ayr, holding positions of importance.

Joseph McIlvaine married second, Jane Hunter, daughter of Adam Hunter, Baille of Ayr, by whom there was no issue. He died in Ayr in May 1762; his will in the register’s office, Edinburgh.

Children of Joseph McIlvaine and Anna Rogerson:

1.       William McIlvaine, born March 31, 1722; died 1770; married first, Anne Emerson; second, Margaret Cross.
2.       David McIlvaine, born September 22, 1723; married Elizabeth Graydon.
3.       John McIlvaine, born April 17, 1725.
4.       Elizabeth McIlvaine, born June 5, 1726; married September 18, 1747, William Gairdner.
5.       Robert McIlvaine, born May 16, 1728.
6.       Anna McIlvaine, born January 8, 1731; married in 1762, John Fleming.
