Eleanor: I really have no clue as to who Mary McIlvain's parents are. I do know that on the 1850 census of Bath County, Kentucky which lists John Steele, Mary McIlvain Steele, William Steele age 3 and Sarah Steele, b. 1849, there is also listed a John B. McIlvain age 8, and James P. McIlvain age 6. They are not Mary's brothers. They are the sons of A William McIlvain and Elizabeth McBee. When William McIlvain died in 1850, some of his children were farmed out to families in the area. Of the list of his 12 children, Mary was not one of them. I thought that maybe a James McIlvain could be her father as he was the bondsman when they married, but can't find any information on that.
