I have McIlrath's in my geneology from Illinois
Were in Illinois (from Indiana in Johnson Co)from around 1850 and forward.
There is a William who would have been born in late 1800's
More information would be helpful
1. What part of Illinois was your grandfather from?
2. approx birth date.
Census lookups probably would prove useful i.e. 1900 1910 1920 and 1930 location needed to pinpoint your particular family

Two McIlrath brothers were the first to Illinois (in my line) James McIlrath b. c 1820 and Robert McIlrath c. 1822
James had a son named William who I believed moved to Mo.
Robert had several children, but I have not looked up much on this line
