Nancy my grandfather was William McIlrath from County Down in the Castlevenon/Tan Valley area not far from Banbridge. He was the youngest of 7. He migrated to Australia with his siblings in the early 1900's. His father was Robert (died Oct 1883) & he was also the youngest of 8. (John, Hugh, Martin, James, Betty, Mary Anne & Agnes. Their father was Hugh (died 1858). I see that Robert's sister Betty married an Robert McIlrath (a cousin?) whose children were James, Robert, Agnes, Isaac & 3 more born in Illinois (Mary, Sarah & William). Obviously we are related but I'm not sure how far back! When we visited Ireland to find the family farm there were no surviving McIlrath's - the last one who had died recently was a David.
Happy hunting!
Cheers!
Cath Gordon
