McIlrath family in Ohio 1800s

My great-grandfather James W. was orphaned as a child and adopted into the McIlrath family. His original name was Gallagher, I've been told. He married Catherine Berg in northern Ohio on September 10th, 1870. They lived in Oberlin for several years before moving to Michigan. I'm looking for information on the family that adopted him as well as info on his natural parents.
