There is now a McHarg/McHargue surname project at www.familytreedna.com. The purpose of this surname project is to sort through the McHarg/McHargues and other close variations of the name, connecting family groups and their links to Scotland and Ireland. This includes McHargs in Australia, Canada and the US. The one McHargue who has been tested is descended from Niall the Nine Hostage Taker, a 5th century clan chief and warlord from northwest Ireland who was extremely prolific and from whom 1 in 12 Irishmen are descended. You can find out about him from a New York Times article printed on Genforum at O'Quinn forum, message 740. You can also read about him at www.familytreedna.com. Are all McHargs/McHargues descended from him? Only DNA testing will determine that. This test requires participation by males with the name McHarg/McHargue. It can not be tested through the female line. I encourage you to be tested or to find a male McHarg in your family to be tested. The more participants we have, the more information we can get. Used in conjunction with the genealogist's paper trail we can learn a lot. If you would like to participate go to the www.familytreedna.com website for complete information and to sign up.
