I traced my family tree 10 years or more ago and discovered that my great great grandfather, Hugh McHarg, was born in Minnigaff. Although I am English I have always had a great love of all things Scottish and I was determined to find out more about this Scottish ancestor of mine. In the UK 1851 census he declared that he was born in Minnigaff, Kirkcudbrightshire, Scotland and was a Grocer aged 44. He married my great great grandmother in Hexham, Northumberland on the 5th March 1834. I made the journey to New Registry House in Edinburgh to try to find out more. Calculating that he was born a year either side of 1806 I searched through all the parish records for Minnigaff, but found no record of a baptism for him. I found McHargs in the registers going back as far as 1695, but there appeared to be only one McHarg baptising children after 1800 and he baptised a child in 1802, 1803 and 1805 and thereafter none. There is of course every possibility that this person, Ebenezer McHarg, may well have been Hugh's father and they may have left the Minnigaff district before Hugh was born or simply that Hugh was never baptised, but of course this is guesswork and cannot be verified. I wonder, therefore, whether there is anyone out there who can throw any light on this question for me.
