I am doing research on the King Family, but I found this interesting bit of information along the way. It can be found in the book "The King Memorial", Henry P. Phelps, pivately printed in 1893, at page 9: "William McHarg was the descendant of Scotch parents belonging to a party of eleven heads of families who settled in Saratoga county in 1774, and called the place Galway, after the home they had left in across the water. William was born in 1778, and eight years later he removed to Albany. Here he grew up and engaged in the mercantile business. Becoming connected with the King family by marriage it so happenend that his brother-in-law, Rufus H., who had acquired some experience in his father's store in Ridgefield [CT], came to Albany, and on attaining his majority was taken into partnership with Mr. McHarg, under the firm name of McHarg and King. This was May 1, 1815. Their place of business was No. 429 South Market street (late 51 Court street) and now 376 Broadway. . . . [King] continued his business with his brother-in-law till 1823, when the firm was dissolved and Rufus H. King & Co. began business as wholesale dry goods merchants at No. 53, afterwards 49 State street, and there continued for twenty-eight long prosperous years. Associated at different times with Mr. King in business were his brother Joshua I. King, Henry Bleecker and John McHarg. . . . John McHarg, son of William McHarg, Mr. King's first partner, became a member in 1837 and continued with the firm till its dissolution and disappearance from the commercial history of Albany in 1851." To connect things up for you, Joshua King had married Anne Ingersoll in Ridgefield CT in 1784. The had many children. Three of the children -- Rufus Howard King, Ann Maria King and Sophia King -- moved from CT to Albany. Sophia King married Willaim McHarg. The connection I have to all this is that Rufus Howard King had a son, Rufus Howard King (II), who had a son Thomas White King, who was my great grandfather. Hope someone finds this info useful!
