McHarg DNA Surname Project

The McHarg DNA surname project is moving steadily along. We have had 7 McHargues test and one McHarg. The McHarg is from Scotland. The McHarg is a distant match to the McHargues, showing a common ancestor several hundred years ago. This is the type of information we are looking for in our search to determine the origin of the McHarg/McHargues.

All McHargues of that spelling are descended from Alexander McHarg/ue who died in 1789 in Dauphin County, Pennsylvania. I believe that all McHargs of any spelling variation may come from the same ancestor and certainly the only McHarg to test so far, doesn't disprove that theory.

We have found that Alexander McHargue (and thus the others tested) is descended from the Ui Neill family of northwest Ireland (Ulster). The Ui Neills are, by definition, descendents of Naill of the Nine Hostages of 5th century Ireland. This is a most interesting character and family!Apparently, one or more of his descendents who took the name McHarg (in a early Gaelic form) migrated to southwest Scotland where McHargs have lived since the 15th century or earlier.

Do all McHargs/McHargues come from the same ancestor? DNA testing will help to not only determine that but also help to connect family groupings of McHargs, possibly determining the origin of your McHarg ancestor in Scotland or Ireland.

Please, if you are a male of the McHarg surname, consider taking part in the McHarg DNA surname project. For more information and to sign up as a participant, please go to our website www.familytreedna.com/public/McHarg_McHargue/
