John McHaffie in Gargerie, Kirkcowan parish, Wigtownshire in southwestern Scotland was a banished Covenanter Presbyterian and is found in many records in the Register of the Privy Council of Scotland, vol 9, vol 10 Gargerie had about 10 people living there, but the house was ordered to be pulled down and destroyed in mid-October 1684 when John was banished Others in the house were Janet McKeachie, Mart.(Margaret) McHaffie, Robert, Jeremy, Alexander, Samuel, etc. Robert was reported as having constantly withdrawn from attending the episcopal church and so he was clearly a Covenanter Presbyterian also. It is not known what befell Robert but family tradition indicates that others in the family worked to pay their passage to America The Reg of Privy Council (RPC) states that John McHaffie in Gargerie was `actuallie att Bothuell' Bridge in June 1679 when the Covenanters fought the king's men (southeast of city of Glasgow).
