Recently new information was found by professional genealogist Gordon Johnson, Scotland Gordon has extensive resources, and in an index found the subject person with reference to Transactions of ...Dumfries and Galloway History group Another very helpful man in Scotland looked up the reference which proved to be from family papers of "Auld Lag" This Lag or Lagg had been among the chief persecutors of the Covenanter Presbyterians in 1600s The papers indicate that soldiers took James McHaffie in Gargarie and all moveables (furniture, implements, whatever) from his home, and he was fined Grierson of Lag killed many Covenanters, and it is possible, likely rather that James McHaffie (called a "rebell") was killed No date is given but in October 1684 when John McHaffie was listed in document as first among occupants in the house at Gargerie, the Sheriff's men pulled down and destroyed the house so no doubt James had been taken prior to that time.
