Here is the latest information I have on John L. McGuire of Jefferson County, AL, son of Davidson McGuire and Margaret Kelley, husband of Britta Ann Green. There are a few new nuggets here. Most of the sources are given; good guesses are mentioned as such.

1. In the 1850 U.S. Census for Jefferson County, AL, John L. is 17, born in AL, and living in the household of his father Davidson and mother Margaret in the Cahaba Valley District. Listed as a farmer.

2. In 1851 Moses and Alphonso Johnson are summoned to court as defendants for assault and battery on John Maguire. Probably our John L. There is no other John Maguire in 1850 Shelby Census. Shelby County AL Court minutes at Rootsweb. Moses Johnson was married first to Nancy Pledger, then Martha Pledger, in-laws of John L.'s sister Elizabeth Jane and others.

3. From the Hebron Church records, P. 83, now located at Samford University in Alabama:

ÒOctober the 5th at ?? Association 1852Ó

ÒReceived by Experience + baptized John McGuire, Jefferson Weaver, Rachel McDonald, Elizabeth Byram, Mary J. Armstrong, and Milley Lesley--Oct. the 7 Dismissed by letter Bro. John Robert Goodwin and Colen (Coleen?) Goodwin.
Received by letter Sister Sarah Lowery, Oct. the 10th, 1852.Ó

John was about 19 when this happened.

4. From the Hebron Church records, P. 91:

ÒDecember Term 1854Ó

ÒAfter religious service the church met in conference.
1st. Bro. John Lowery, having been requested to give up his license, complied with the request.
2nd. It being reported that Bro. John McGuire had been swearing, the case was taken up, and Bro. John McLaughlin appointed to cite him to attend on next conference.
3rd. It being reported that Bro. Jeremiah W. McDanal had been selling spirituous liquors, the case was taken up and refered to our next conference.
4th. Bro. John Lowery requests Letters of Dismission for himself and his wife Mary D. Lowery, which was granted.

John was about 20 or 21 when this happened. He had been married to Britta for about 11 months.

5. From the Hebron Church records, P. 91:

ÒJanuary Term 1855Ó

ÒAfter religious Exercises, the church met in conference.
1st. Took up the case of Bro. John McGuire, and he failing to answer to the request of the Church, was excluded...Ó

John was abt 22 when this happened; had been married to Britta about one year.

6. In the 1860 US Census for Al, J. L. McGuire is listed in the Cahaba Valley with his wife Britana, 26, daughter Ellin, 5 and daughter Mary, 3. He is 27, a farmer, born in AL, has $50, and cannot read.

The date of this census being June 21, 1860, he was probably born between January and June in 1833.
