Joseph Guffey posted a fairly detailed report on the family of William Holmes McGuffey on genforum on 2/10/2001.
Readers interested in William Holmes McGuffey may want to refer to the information reported on the site below:

This site is produced by the Miami University Libraries in cooperation with the McGuffey Museum at that campus. I suspect that the information is fairly reliable. They do report their reference sources - very professional.
(For those of you unfamiliar with Ohio, this Miami University is near Oxford, Ohio and relates to the name of the river following through this area - the Miami River in the Miami Valley area.)
Joseph Guffey stated that William Holmes McGuffey was born in Westmoreland County, PA. This is in conflict with other sources about this person - including the Internet link given above. It appears most likely that William Holmes McGuffey was born in Buffalo Township, Washington County, PA. The McGuffey family lived a short distance from my immigrant Milligan family. Alexander McGuffey appears in the 1800 census for Washington County - right where he is supposed to be. On the same census page is Alexander's father, William McGuffey. William Holmes McGuffey was born in September of 1800, so the 1800 census should be a fairly accurate marker for this family. There is no Alexander McGuffey family listed in Westmoreland County, PA, at least not in my 1800 census index.
There are some interesting McGuffey-Milligan connections. The website above reports that one of William Holmes' sisters married a James Milligan in Ohio. I have not linked this James Milligan to my own line yet. I also tried to link him back to a known Milligan family in County Tyrone, but no luck yet. I am curious if Susan Milligan, who made a recent posting here, is related to this individual.
One of William Holmes McGuffey's grandparents was Jane Roney Holmes. There was a Sarah Roney married to a William Milligan and living in Washington County in the 1790 and 1800 census reports. They lived in Finley Township, a short distance away from my John Milligan and the William and Alexander McGuffey families. I suspect that Jane and Sarah Roney were sisters - they would be in the same generation. I have no record to confirm this, though.
I have not yet been able to link my John Milligan with this William Milligan family. My John Milligan family came to America in 1790 and settled in Washington County. I was able to locate him there as early as 1798 in the Federal Direct tax record.
Continuing, an 1814 Will exists for a William McGiffin of Buffalo Township, Washington County. The Will then indicates that its author was William McGuffey, so it is inconsistent. Its Executor in 1814 was my direct ancestor from Washington County, John Milligan.
John Milligan's youngest son was David Milligan. In 1851, David himself is serving as the Executor for a Will for a William McGuffey. I do not yet have a copy of this second McGuffey Will. I found the reference to the Will while studying the tax records for Finley Township where David's farm was located.
There are several posssibilities here. Another McGuffey son descended from the original William McGuffey and stayed in Washington County. Or, a relation such as an uncle or cousin moved to Washington County after 1800. Alternatively, a separate line came into the county with the same last name. I think we have the first possibility in play here. All the McGuffey listings right through the 1840 census places this family line in Buffalo Township - and in a name sequence location in the census record that suggests that they stayed on the same farm.
A tract of property deed records at the Washington County Court House could yield interesting information.
