My mother's maiden name is McGookin, which I understand is an alternative spelling of McGuckin.

I was always told that the name came from the Monaghan/Armagh border area.

I was also told that another alternative spelling is McGuigan (as in Barry McGuigan the famous Irish boxer who came from Clones in Monaghan).

I believe my family moved from this area at the turn of the century to work in Belfast.
