If anyone has any information or any other speculations I would appreciate hearing from you. Family lore said that our Matthew was a cabine tmaker and that son, John, was born in Philadelphia but I like the Pittsburgh area better because the Allegheny and Monongahela rivers come together to form the Ohio River and because following the American Revolution, the village of Pittsburgh continued to grow. One of its earliest industries was building boats for settlers to enter the Ohio Country. My ancestor, b.PA1818 Matthew was a cabinet maker in Platte County, MO (across the river from Leavenworth, KS).
b.IRE1750 Matthew McGregor d. Fayette Twp. Allegheny Co, PA 1830 Ranger, 2d Bn, Washington Co, PA Militia under Capt. Cessna, Wife: Mary Walker
(Mary Walker came from a ship-building family.)
Allegheny County, PA was Washington County until 1785.
I have Matthew's will, written 1830, probated 1831 and plats of his land and had made up a really neat scenario that he was the father of my b. PA 1797 John (or Daniel) McGregor, who disappeared from the Ohio census between 1850 and 1860. His wife b. PA 1799 Letitia Caldwell lived in PA/OH/MO/KS..
I have some slight basis for this - Robert McCracken was the sole executor of the 1831 will - and one of the 10 McGregor/Caldwell children was named Robert McCracken McG.
In OH1850 Census, in Cambridge, Guernsey Co, OH John is living with Leticea (50), three sons 19, 16, and 14, all born PA, a daughter (11) and a son (6) were b. OH. At least one of his married daughters, Mary (Edward) Parkinson was living there, too. (From PA to OH 1836-1839)
I have a copy of the 1831 will of Matthew McGregor In the 1860 Census Letitia is living with the Parkinsons and when she died in 1873 in Leavenworth, KS her home was with son Robert McCracken McG in Leavenworth, KS.
I had checked the Enumerations PA 1790 - 1820 and the family was the right shape to be John's and with an older male... (?Mattthew, cabinet maker?)living with them.
Please and thank you for you consideration, Helen
