Captain Alexander Wishart & Mary McGregor
I have stewed about the identity of both of these people- Alexander Wishart and his wife Mary McGregor for ten years.
I am not related but have worked on their files for a long time for other people.
One of their supposed sons Alexander born 1792 was married to Jennet or Janet McLean daughter of Hector McLean and Christian/Christine McCallum.
Another son John Wishart born 1809 was married to Jessie McKean- they had a son Robert born 1847 who married Clementina McLean who is related to my McLean daughters. Hence, my roundabout interest in these families...
This Alexander Wishart was a Sergeant in the 42nd Regiment of Foot when he married Mary McGregor January 15, 1790; she was a daughter of a Duncan McGregor.
Now....many people have thought that same Alexander Wishart who was married to Mary McGregor was the son of James Wishart and Ann Abernathy. Not possible. Alexander son of James and Ann was born June 25, 1781 at Forres, Moray. This man was nine years old in 1790 when Alexander married Mary McGregor. Alexander son of James and Ann did get married Sept. 5, 1831 at Barony, Lanark to Helen Dick, whose parents I have not yet found.
I found a death reg. today at Scotlandspeople for "Mrs. Mary McGregor relict of the late Captain Alexander Wishart"- date is showing there as November 18 1843, St. Cuthberts, Edinburgh, her age was 72 years. HOWEVER, right after that, I found Mary's will which was prepared May 1847, so my guess is she died November 1848, not 1843, and someone has posted wrong year at Scotlandspeople. I have to check this further.
Now back to her husband Captain Alexander Wishart- many people have recorded and posted at Ancestry.com and at LDS site, etc. that Mary's Alexander died in the 1850's at Blysthwood, Glasgow. WRONG INFO. I think the Alexander Wishart who died January 15, 1858 in Glasgow was the husband of Helen Dick, the son of James and Ann mentioned above.
One of Captain Alexander Wishart's daughters Magdalena Gordon Wishart was born May 1811 and died Dec. 18, 1832 of "fever" at age 21 years- she was recorded as the youngest daughter of THE LATE CAPTAIN ALEXANDER WISHART.
And...when his daughter Francis Wishart got married in 1834 to the Reverend Richard Hunter, she was recorded as the daughter of the LATE Captain Alexander Wishart.
I have scoured Scotlandspeople for a death for Alexander and come up empty- however I see online a reference to a Captain Alexander Wishart who died in 1810 and I have a feeling this was the man I am looking for. Magdalena Wishart was born May 1811, but her father could certainly have passed away in 1810 prior to her birth.
The next challenge will be in identifying Mary McGregor's parents. She must have been born about 1770-1771 time frame, and was the daughter of a Duncan McGregor, possibly of South Leith.
A descendent in this family passed this info to me years ago but part of it cannot be correct- and I will explain why below...
1902 obit of Kenneth Wishart, a son of the Alexander Wishart who died in Ontario, Canada in 1823, born 1792 in Scotland; he was a son of Captain Wishart and Mary McGregor...
"He [Kenneth Wishart] was born in Toronto (then called Muddy York) in 1820. His father was Captain Alexander Wishart of the 42nd Highlanders, who came to Upper Canada to organize the Canadian militia. His mother was the eldest daughter of the late Capt. Hector McLean of the 42nd Highlanders. His grandfather, Capt. [Alexander] Wishart commanded the 98th Royal Highlanders, who, on his return from India, was presented with the freedom of the city of Inverness. Capt. Wishart's wife was a daughter of Lieut. Gen. Sir Duncan McGregor, who was one of the few survivors from the notable wreck of the East India steamship Kent."
The part that I don't agree with is the sentence that says Captain Wishart's wife was a daughter of the Duncan McGregor who survived the steamship wreck....that Duncan McGregor was born in 1787; his children were born between 1825 and 1838. Even if he started having children in 1807 when he was 20 years old, a daughter of his, born 1807 or later, could not have been married in 1790 to Captain Alexander Wishart. It just does not make sense and I have never been able to make sense of that particular sentence.
I will post more info as I find it- if anyone has any info that will help me, please post here or write to me directly.
