Social Security Death Index Name: Mary Beth Feeley SSN: 330-22-6821 Last Residence: 60148 Lombard, Du Page, Illinois, United States of America Born: 16 Aug 1928 Died: 8 Nov 1998 State (Year) SSN issued: Illinois (Before 1951 ) Chicago Tribune (IL) - November 11, 1998 Deceased Name: MARY BETH FEELEY, POPULAR TEACHER Mary Beth Feeley, 70, a longtime Lombard resident whose commitment to teaching spanned two decades, died Sunday in her home. A graduate of Chicago Teachers College, Mrs. Feeley began her teaching career in the Chicago Public Schools system, where she taught various subjects to 4th through 8th graders. After marrying, she left teaching to raise her family. She returned several years later to teach English and reading to 3rd and 4th graders at Sacred Heart Grade School in Lombard. "She was a caring person, warm and loving, who just loved being around the children," said her daughter, Mary Bell. "When she left teaching, there was never any doubt she would return. It was just a question of when." A well-liked teacher, Mrs. Feeley was often approached by students wanting to chat with her whenever she was spotted running errands around town. "She was a wonderful person both in and out of the classroom," said Barbara McIntyre, a former teacher at Sacred Heart. "She was a great listener, someone to talk to about anything. She was strong on the outside, but mushy on the inside." Known for her relaxed teaching style, Mrs. Feeley was described by colleagues as a teacher's teacher. "She taught the basics, but always in a way that enhanced the program," said McIntyre, whose three sons were taught by Mrs. Feeley. "She had an approach to teaching that was almost calming, yet she always maintained control. The only time I recall her even batting an eyelash was when a student accidently slammed her finger in a drawer." Mrs. Feeley also will be remembered for the interest she had in her students' lives and the extra time she devoted to them. "When my husband died," said McIntyre, "my one son was having difficulty concentrating on his studies. She did her best to smooth over the rough times and grease the skids for him." Other survivors include her husband, James; four sons, Jim, Frank, David and John; two daughters, Marguerite Simon and Eileen Clark; a brother, Dr. Jack McGrail; a sister, Marguerite Rooney; and 17 grandchildren. Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. Thursday in Brust Funeral Home, 135 S. Main St., Lombard. Services will begin with prayers at 9:30 a.m. Friday at the funeral home, followed by a mass at 10 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 114 S. Elizabeth St., Lombard.
